Tirana, September 19, 2018 - Albania is ready for the 1st Girls' Summit. On October 11, the global campaign #Girl2Leader, organized to promote girls' involvement in politics and decision-making, will focus on education, services, participation, violence and inequality of girls in Albania.
The Summit is organized by the Alliance of Women MPs, the Albanian National Youth Network (ANYN), the Child Rights Centre Albania (CRCA), the Albanian Coalition for Education (ACE) and the Tirana Youth Parliament, under the auspices of three ambassadors of this Summit, Mrs. Elona Gjebrea, vice/Chairperson of the Women's Alliance, Mrs. Çupi, Chairperson of the Women's Alliance and Mrs. Ogerta Manastirliu, Minister of Health and Social Protection of Albania.
The Summit has fourteen Ambassadors: 7 MPs from the Albanian Parliament, including Nora Malaj, Rudina Hajdari, Klajda Gjosha and Elisa Spiropali, and 7 women from civil society and media, Edlira Haxhiymeri, Klodeta Dibra, Flora Nikolla, Manjola Hasa, Anila Meço, Dhurata Myrtollari and Hueyda El Saied, all with outstanding achievements in their public and professional lives.
The campaign ambassadors will share their experience in the professions and their inspirational stories to encourage and become a source of inspiration for young girls in Albania. They will be supported and mentored by our Ambassadors for a full-year, until the next Summit takes place, while during the year they will share their joint experience in a school or university with other girls and boys.
Around 22 young girls, aged 15-21, are being considered as potential candidates for the Summit. They have shared their inspirational stories on social networks by using hashtags: #Girl2Leader, #Girl2LeaderAL and #Girl2Leadershqiperi on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and Storify. The summit, supported by Global Campaign for Education, coincides with the International Girls' Day!
In Albania, almost half of the population are women and girls. They suffer significant disparities and inequalities in the family and society. Physical, psychological and sexual violence in the family, society, schools and workplace are present in the lives of many women and girls. Women and girl’s representation at the Parliament, political parties and local government remains at very low level. The organisers plan to close this year Summit with the adoption of the Resolution for Girls Rights in Albania!
