Majority of youth in Albania have no trust to the Government and political parties

On the International Youth Day, the Annual Report "Youth in Albania" shows that young people are still far from the attention of the Government and Municipalities across Albania

Tirana, 12 August 2019 – The Albanian National Youth Network, the Albanian Coalition for Education and CRCA/ECPAT Albania, on the International Youth Day, published this morning the main findings from the data collected for the Annual Report "Youth in Albania" by the Child and Youth Policy Hub Albania. The report reveales that despite student protests, Government and Municipalities in Albania continue not to have young people at the center of their public policies and programs.

“Since last year's Report, almost nothing has changed. Moreover we see areas where the Government and municipalities have failed or have not worked at all for youth ”- said Ervjola Osmanaj, President of the National Youth Network in Albania.

The 2nd National Report “Youth in Albania” brings facts and figures on the difficult and in some cases hopeless situation that young people in Albania face. It is based on face to face interviews with young people and questionnaires filled by over 1000 young people in all 12 regions of Albania. The report also assesses the impact and changes that public programs and policies have had for young people during 2018-2019.

According to the report, 94% of young people say they have no hope to both central and local governments of solving their issues. About 39% of young people interviewed for the report stated that unemployment is the main problem that they face, while in the last year's report, this value was around 30%.

The report brings a grim reality not only for the trust to local and central government, but also for the credibility of political parties in Albania. About 89% of young people reported that municipalities are not at all friendly with young people and almost 57% of young people rate their work for youth with zero point.

The report also shows that young people have a very high level of distrust trowards politics in Albania. Some 62% of young people say they do not trust any political group to address youth issues and cooperate with young people. Around 84% of young people say that political parties are not at all open to address youth issues, stating that in only 35% of cases political parties have consult young people and that only during election campaigns.

The 2nd National Report “Youth in Albania 2019” aims at identifying major issues of concern for young people in Albania, focusing on local issues as well as national ones including the role of the central and local government, political parties and CSOs.

In the presentation of the report, Altin Hazizaj, Director of CRCA/ECPAT Albania, emphasized that “This report comes at a very significant moment for Albania and calls for reflection from local and central institutions on the situation of youth in Albania. The report comes out on the International Youth Day and it should be an alarm bell for the Government and Municipalities. The government and every municipality should have action plans for young people and programs for their support and empowerment, in order to stop the exodus of young people from Albania."

Around the world live about 1.8 billion young people, but many live in poverty, without access to education and often forgotten by their governments. International Youth Day, announced by the UN in 1999, seeks to bring to the attention of states and governments that young people are an extraordinary force to change and improve the country and society in which they live. No state can prosper if it does not care for its youth. In Albania, International Youth Day has been organized by CRCA / ECPAT Albania, ACE and ANYN since 2012.
