6 April 2018- Today, the students in Albania wrote their story! After a long preparatory work, supported by CRCA Albania, Albanian Coalition for Education (ACE) and Albanian National Youth Network - ANYN, students from all public universities in Albania, gathered together to launch their National Alliance of Students.
Approximately 115,000 students attend public universities in Albania. Limited participation of students in the decision-making processes at the Senates of the Universities and lack of a well-organized structure for all students nationwide brought together the students of public universities in order to establish their Alliance (AKSS).
The National Alliance of Students (AKSS) aims to be a national network of students’ senators of every public University in Albania in order to seek to address students’ rights and their concerns related to higher education in Albania, while responding to the immediate priorities of students throughout Albania. NAS aims to establish a supportive climate for students in every public University across the country, where through functional structures they can get empowered and able to solve their concerns. The Alliance will focus on empowering NAS members as well as students to participate in decision and policy making processes in education at University level as well as in various governing institutions.
Some of the major issues that the students brought forward during the meeting were: Law for Higher Education; The need for a free public higher education; Education budget; Student Card; and Conditions and infrastructure in public universities.
Special guests to greet the establishment of the National Alliance of Students were the President of the Republic of Albania Mr. Ilir Meta and the Chair of the Committee on Education and Public Information in the Albanian Parliament, Mrs. Albana Vokshi.
During his greeting speech Mr. Meta said that the establishment of the "National Alliance of Student" is the right message for the new generation of Albania, which should take on more responsibilities, become an active part of the democratic processes, the demand for transparency and accountability, and the promoter of Europeanization of society. The President of the Republic of Albania expressed his readiness to support at any moment the National Alliance of Students, in order that the voices of students throughout the country to be heard!
The chair of the Parliamentary Education Committee, Mrs. Vokshi, during her speech, guaranteed her maximum support to the National Alliance of Students, who said that the Parliamentary Education Committee would be open to all students to discuss and address all the student issues and concerns across the country.
