Tirana, June 18, 2018 - The Albanian National Youth Network (ANYN) held a protest this morning in front of the Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth to seek urgent solution to the issue of Youth Card. Over 210,000 students and high school students across the country have for years been unable to get Youth Cards, from which they would benefit discounts on transport, books, clothing and restaurants.
Representatives of youth organizations conveyed the message that the Ministry of Education should implement the National Action Plan for Youth and the Law on Higher Education, among other things, that sanction the right to youth card to every young person in Albania. Although promised since 2005, from all political parties during elections, the youth card remains an unfulfilled promise.
During the protest, the activists of the Albanian National Youth Network(ANYN), disagreeing with the situation in which students and high school students are at the present, asked the Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth to open urgently open the discussions and start working, so that the new academic year 2018-2019 can find young people benefiting from the Youth card.
ANYN representatives also formally submitted a request for an immediate meeting with the Minister of Education to discuss the situation of youth rights in Albania. Following the protest, the youth were welcomed at an unannounced meeting by junior Minister for Youth at the Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth, who discussed specifically what measures they plan to implement soon to make the youth card a reality.
